HOME LEASES TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

Currently, LHHC owns and leases over 60 single-family homes, located in 20 communities across Wayne County, to almost 200 people. This year it plans to build affordable, accessible, single-family homes through low-income housing tax credits and grant funding, to meet the growing need for affordable, barrier-free housing in the City of Detroit and throughout Wayne County.

LH I & II PROJECTS

Working together with HUD, Wayne County, and Redford Township, LHHC has built "LH I," a project with four barrier-free, rent subsidized homes located in Wayne, Romulus and Redford Township. The homes were built with a generous capital advance grant from HUD and supplemental grants from Wayne County and Redford Township. The HUD grant also provides a rental subsidy to make them affordable for years to come. Each home provides reasonable, subsidized rent. "LH II," funded in 2006, provides a capital advance to build three additional homes in Inkster and Westland. The project funded by HUD will include a spring 2008 groundbreaking.

HOMEOWNERSHIP AND COUNSELING SERVICES

LHHC's initial relationship with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority has been successful in providing home-ownership counseling and down payment assistance to first time homebuyers. This initiative resulted in 25 people with disabilities purchasing their first home. It has also led to hundreds of people receiving counseling and the opportunity to explore homeownership. Visit the Home Buyers Club page for further information.

THE GATEWAY PROJECT

Another exciting development is The Gateway Project, which includes working with MSHDA, the Wayne County Community and Economic Development department and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, to build six new barrier-free homes in Romulus. Due to generous funding from each party, tenants will pay no more than 30% of their income towards rent subsidies. That groundbreaking is also slated for spring 2008.

HOME MAINTENANCE PARTNERSHIPS

LHHC continues to seek partnerships to make homes safe and healthy for its tenants. The city of Westland and United Way contributed greatly to this effort. During the past several years, LHHC has appreciated both corporate and community support in maintaining homes. Thanks to the City of Westland, LHHC is able to meet the daily challenge of maintaining the quality of its homes in that community. With the help of two grants totaling $110,000 plus matching funds, LHHC has renovated eight of its Westland homes and looks forward to future developments in the housing community.

SAFE AND ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES

Our more recent collaborative effort includes partnering with the WARM Training Center, United Way and the Facilities Center to make LHHC homes more energy efficient. Thanks to this partnership, LHHC has improved four homes to meet energy efficient standards. Two of Liberty Hill's homes located in Southgate, have been awarded grants that will be used toward purchasing new windows, insulation and other items to create an energy-efficient environment that will reduce costs for the people who occupy the homes.
